GEOGRAPHICAL FACTS

Here you can find some geographical facts about the location (Bled and Gorenjska region) of the ASTN/2003 workshop.

Geographical position

Its natural beauty, points of historical interest and an advantageous geographical location south of the Alps, make Bled an ideal place to visit. The image of Bled with the castle, the lake, and the island in the middle of the lake, are sights by which Bled is known to nearly the entire world.

The Bled Castle, a silent witness to its former power, resolute and proud on a high rock above the lake, stands watch over the town. The Bled lake is known for its exceptional beauty. The forested slopes of Jelovica and Pokljuka, the Julian Alps with their highest peak Triglav - the symbol of the Slovenian nation - and the Karavanke Mountains, serve as the background to this heavenly spot.

In the middle of the lake lies the island with the Church of Assumption. The island and the church have a rich history. Inside the church there is the wishing bell from 1534. In addition to all these features, Bled and its surroundings provide a number of other interesting sights that are worth a visit.

Climate

Bled's is a mild, healthy sub-Alpine climate with the longest swimming season of any Alpine resort. The ridges of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke protect it from the chilly northern winds. During the summer months there is no fog.

Average summer temperature: 21.00 C
Average winter temperature: -2.00 C
